Teaching principles of chemistry at Key Stage 3, Inspiration Trust Curriculum Centre, Monday, 15. July 2019

About the course
In this session we will consider the nature of chemistry within the national curriculum. Chemistry, unlike biology and physics has few concepts which are observable through everyday scenarios – it is highly abstract. This lack of realism means pupils come to chemistry with little in the way of pre-conceptions. That said, the abstract nature of the subject readily lends itself to misinterpretation if it not developed through careful and purposeful teaching. We will consider the importance of tier 2 and 3 vocabulary in the teaching of chemistry and how above all other outcomes, this should arguably be our first goal – language acquisition.
Throughout the session we will build teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in relation to the language of chemistry by considering typical misconceptions that manifest through dialogue and later more complex conceptual understanding.
Who should attend?
This course is aimed at anyone who teaches chemistry at KS3 or KS4. Whilst suitable for non-specialists, this is primarily an opportunity for chemistry specialists to engage in continuing professional development within the science that first inspired them.
