All businesses have intellectual property (IP), but not all business understand how to utilise their IP to maximise their innovation and success. Come to our masterclass to hear about what IP can do for your business and sign up to our Brunel Legal Advice Centre for a free IP Audit and advice letter.
Not understanding the true value of the intellectual property (such as copyright, trade mark, design, patent, trade secrets) is a missed opportunity for innovation and growth for any business and has come particularly is vital for survival in the digital economy. IP is highly valuable to business as an asset, but really understanding IP can also drive innovation, secure brand protection and mitigate risks.

10:00-12:30: Presentations and panel discussion from IP and Innovation experts:
 
1.       Welcome by Professor William Leahy, Vice Provost, Brunel University London
 
2.       Chair: Professor Robert Holdway, Director of Innovation, Co-Innovate Brunel University
Rob will introduce Co-Innovate[1] and talk of his own experience of IP as founder of Giraffe Innovation Ltd and Industrial Design Lead at Red Bull Advanced Technologies.
 
3.       Dr Hayleigh Bosher, Lecturer in Intellectual Property Brunel University and IP Consultant
Hayleigh will provide an over view of the different types of intellectual property, highlighting the importance of building a holistic IP strategy for your business relating to innovation and enforcement.
 
4.       Margaret Briffa, Leading Intellectual Property Lawyer - ‘IP and how not to be foxed by it – Trunki Case Study’
Margaret well known for representing businesses in infringement litigation concerning all core rights, in particular, trade marks, designs and anti-counterfeiting strategies. The talk will include an overview of lessons from Trunki and the importance of early involvement of IP in the innovation process.
 
5.       Nick Kounoupias, Chief Counsel Anti-Copying in Designs (ACID)
Nick will talk about the impact of IP on the development of a product and the importance of having an IP strategy in place, particularly considering Design rights.

6.       Mandy Haberman, Inventor and Entrepreneur best known for the Anywayup® Cup
Mandy is a world authority on the experience of IP enforcement and inventor of the groundbreaking Haberman Feeder and Anywayup Cup for children. Mandy recently featured on the BBC’s One Show on the UK’s 400 years of patents and how she found it necessary to enforce her patents when these innovations quickly garnered 40% of existing companies’ market share. Mandy is on the steering board of the UK IP Office and a director of the Intellectual Property Awareness Network. Mandy will talk about her personal experience of enforcing her IP, and how that has influenced her IP and innovation strategy.
 
7.       Michael Neilsen, Engineering and IT Group, Carpmaels & Ransford
Michael’s talk will focus patents and patentable inventions, what can be protected, what to consider in your creative process, necessary steps to take, and explain when to use a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
 
Michael works closely with clients, from sole inventors through to start-ups and large multinationals, helping identify patentable inventions in new products and services and developing patent portfolios from the ground up. With a background in programming and application development, Michael’s particular expertise lies in the fields of computer-implemented and software-related inventions.
 
 
12:30 – 13:30: Networking Lunch and “World Café”
This is an opportunity for companies to network with the IP experts as well as Brunel’s law and, designs students.
 
13:30 – 16:30: FREE IP Audit with Brunel Legal Advice Centre
During this free legal consultation with the Brunel Law Pro Bono Centre, the IP experts and Law students will get to know you and your business in order to assess your current and potential IP and undertake an initial IP audit.
 
Following the Masterclass you will be provided with an IP Audit and Advice Letter.
