Higher Education Summer School (Barnstaple), Petroc (Brannams), Wednesday, 14. August 2019

We understand that some people may be apprehensive about starting a degree course, especially if they are new to this level of study or have been away from education for some time. To provide a head start on a course at Petroc we have developed a series of workshops to prepare for academic studies. 
09.00 to 11.00am - IT Skills for Beginners 
This workshop will provide a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, including; producing and saving documents; Microsoft PowerPoint presentations; how to send and respond to emails using Outlook and how to use the internet. 
11.15-12.45pm - Research Skills 
This workshop will enable you to get the most out of the University of Plymouth's electronic library catalogue (Primo), Petroc's 'MyDiscover' and Google to source scholarly electronic resources needed for assessments. In addition, guidance will be provided for research tips and tricks; citation and referencing and how to access a large selection of electronic resources including full text journal packages, e-books and subject related bibliographic databases. 
12.45-13.25pm - Lunch 
Lunch will be provided for those who have pre booked. 
13.30-15.00pm - Introduction to Study Skills and Writing Skills 
This workshop has been created to give an introduction to the essential academic skills students need in higher education, including; how to write a good essay, with examples of good practice and what to avoid; critical reading, writing, speaking and listening; structure and coherence in academic writing; extensive reading, note-taking and summarising. 
15.15-16.15pm - Introduction to the UCAS Application Process
This informative session offers guidance on the different stages of the UCAS application process, including key deadlines, jargon busting, explanation of different kinds of offers and support for the personal statement.

Am I eligible?
This programme is available for students who have already been interviewed and been offered a place on a course, by the course tutor. Eligible programmes include Access to HE and Foundation Degrees, if you are unsure of your eligibility please email projects@
The event is part funded by the European Social Fund; participants will need to pre register and provide evidence of their right to live and work in the UK, and proof of age. e.g. a valid full passport (EU Member). Following the Eventbrite registration, a member of the Petroc Shaping Futures team will contact you to arrange a date to complete the participant paperwork, that is a requirement of the funding, if this has not already been completed during your course interview.
