Health Librarians Engaging with Medical Graphics for Improved Literacy, Irish Hospice Foundation, Friday, 06. July 2018

Wherever the art of medicine is loved there is also a love of humanity- Hippocrates.
This 1/2 day workshop will provide attendees with a toolkit of references, ideas and practical resources to integrate the use of Medical Graphics/Comics to help further the knowledge and skills base for librarians working in the Health Sector. 
Programme:
9:45 Registration/Tea & Coffee on arrival 
10:00 Interactive session focussing on the role of Medical Graphics/Comics (Jane Burns)
11:00  Exploration of the power of comics & cartoons to tell personal stories and how they relate to broader social  issues. (Debbie Jenkinson, Professional Cartoon Artist)
11:15-1:00
 - Using Altmetrics to Measure Attention and Impact of Medical Graphics Research
 - Using Medical Mapping to summarise health expeirences to make complex concepts easier to understand - Creative interactive session where participants will develop resources, accompanying narrative                  resources for health literacy.       


About the Presenters:
Jane Burns  is an LIS professional who is exploring the area of Medical Humanities for her PhD topic  See more: 
Debbie Jenkinson is a comic creator and illustrator living in Dublin 9. Her comics explore the small triumphs and frustrations of ordinary life, like Remorse, a long comic about a girl who gets trapped in a call centre job for ten years. Failed romances, overfed cats and the inner lives of office workers feature again and again in her stories. Her next long project is another romantic misadventure set in Dublin, called Ghosting.
She is co-founder of the Comics Lab, (now a part of DCAF) a member of Illustrators Ireland and of Stray Lines Comics Collective. See more at
